School of Architecture and Urban Planning

The School of Architecture and Planning was founded in August, 1952, developing from the Department of Urban Rural Development, Fujian College of Architecture & C.E. The school now has four undergraduate programs: Architecture, Urban and Rural Planning, Landscape Architecture, and Environmental Design.

The current enrolment is 1426 students, including 570 Architecture majors, 320 in Urban Planning, and 536 in Art and Design. With an employment rate of 96 percent, graduates are well received by the professional community.

There are 101 faculty members, including 87 full-time teachers (28 in Architecture, 25 in Urban Planning, 27 in Art and Design, and seven in Measurement), with four instructors, eight administration staff members, and two librarians. Out of all the teachers, six are professors, 22 associate professors, 42 lecturers and 17 teaching assistants. Among them, senior technical posts count for 32.2 percent, with eight PRC Class I Registered Architects, eight National Registered Planners, two Members of the Chinese Calligraphers’ Association, and four members of the CPTA Design Council. Six of the faculty members have doctoral degrees, four are doctoral degree candidates, and 66 hold master’s degrees. In all, 82.8 percent of all teachers have a master’s degrees or higher. As to the age spectrum: 15, or 17.2 percent of all teachers are above 45, and 41, or 47.1 percent are below 35. Of the nine visiting professors, three are member of the Colleges and Universities Architecture Committee, three are members of the Colleges and Universities Urban Planning Committee, and three are renowned professors in art and design.

The school has two provincial featured majors, Urban Planning and Architecture; one provincial talents cultivating innovation centre: The Architectural Application-oriented Talents Cultivating Mode Innovation centre; four provincial featured courses, including Principles of Urban Planning; two university-level key disciplines: Architectural Design and Theory and Urban Planning and Design; and a university-level teaching group: Architecture, Urban Planning. There is a library, a lab center (including an Architectural Creation and Image Technology Center, a Fundamental Design Lab, a Modeling Lab, an Art Deco Lab, a Ceramic Arts Lab, an Architectural Physics Lab, and a Measurement and Geographic information Lab), two institutes: the Planning and Design Institute of FJUT and the Surveying Technology Institute of FJUT, and two university-level research institutes: the Architectural Culture Research Institute and the City and Architecture Research Institute. In addition, there are three professional teaching teams and a measuring lab. The department covers an area of 10672 m2, with the teaching building 2085.9 m2, consisting of two teaching buildings with a walking corridor in between. The six-floor main building, including drawing classrooms, labs, lecture halls, multimedia classrooms, a multi-functional conference hall and offices, reaches 23.85 meters high.

Teachers engage in research work related to their teaching. In the past five years, the school has received more than 60 university-level scientific research programs and 11 teaching and research programs, including one "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" national sub-item of the applied colleges—"Application-oriented Talents Training Mode in Chinese Universities", one social science and two science and technology programs from Fujian province, Educational foundation funding from the Department of Education of Fujian Province: six A-type programs and eight B-type programs, and six Decision-Making Consultation Projects from the Fujian Association for Science and Technology. Faculty members have published 238 papers, with six in the EI collection, and four books. The school has won the honor of "Excellent Thesis", selected by the National City Planning Conference of Basic Teaching, three first, three second, and two third FJUT teaching prizes, one third prize for educational scientific research papers, two third prizes from the Social Science Union Conference—"Suggestions of Advancing Two First Areas Construction", two third prizes from the international symposium on geographical relations between Fujian and Taiwan, one first, three second and five third prizes, plus four honorable mentions, from Fujian Excellent City Planning and design, and two third prizes from Fujian Village and Town planning.
