Architecture

Specialty Introduction

The Architecture Program originated in September 1987 from the Urban Planning of Fujian Construction Engineering School, and in 2003, undergraduates with this major were admitted. It is a five-year program, with graduates receiving the bachelor's degree in Engineering. Currently, more than 1800 graduates are working in eight provinces. Out of 428 graduates, 26 have been admitted to postgraduate programs.

Students from the program have been awarded many honors and prizes:

  • From the National Architecture Professional Students Homework Exhibition, organized by the National Higher Architecture committee:
    • 2006: one "Excellent Work " prize for social practice report
    • 2008: one "Excellent Assignment" of juniors
    • 2009: two "Excellent Assignment" of juniors
  • 2006 China Hand-Painted Building Picture Competition (published in Journal of Architecture, the 8th volume, 2007): three students awarded honors.
  • Students’ Architecture design competitions of Fujian colleges and universities 2007-2008: one first prize, two second prizes.
  • Fujian Town and City Homestead Design Competition 2009: three second prizes, four third prizes and five Honorable Mention.

Architecture is a featured major of Fujian Province. Architectural Design and Architectural Decorative Structure are courses of excellence of Fujian Province, and Architectural Physics and Architectural Construction are university-level courses of excellence, awarded for the faculty members and teaching team. “Architectural Creation and Image Technology Research and Practice” and “House Architecture” have been awarded the first and second “Teaching Prize” from FJUT. “Predestination and Origin—Fujian and Taiwan Traditional Building and Its Origin” won third prize in excellent papers in science, and “Types and Cultural Characteristics of Fujian and Taiwan Traditional Buildings” won second prize from the Department of Civil Affairs of Fujian Province.

The Architecture program aims to help students gain expertise in architecture, in both their knowledge and practical abilities, while helping them develop morally, intellectually and physically. Their spirits to serve and innovate, and startup abilities, are also encouraged.

Curriculum Introduction

Architecture, Fundamentals of Architectural Design covers design theory and provides basic design exercises. The design theory consists of architecture conspectus, basic elements and knowledge, and steps of design and conformation of structure. Through the exercises, students will learn the skills of architecture illustration, the methods, and disciplines of space combination.

Architectural Design focuses on small public building and villa design. Through a series of medium-sized architectural design projects, students learn correct design thinking and methods. This course is an extension of Fundamentals of Architectural Design. It helps students grasp the design principles, acquire and apply knowledge, and use independent thinking. It emphasizes the influence of society, culture and technology on architectural design, and enhances students’ ability to create a balance between group space and the urban environment.

Principles of Public Architecture Design introduces the general knowledge of architecture, especially as it pertains to public buildings--the overall environment layout, the functional relationship between them and their space combination, their structure and technology, as well as the artistic process of creating their external shapes. Through this course, students will grasp the general characteristics, principles and methods of public architectural design, form a comprehensive architectural view, and learn the development of architecture and architectural theories, laying the necessary theoretical foundation for future design.

Architectural Drawing is a comprehensive introduction to the basic knowledge and skills. It is about projection, including the basic principles and forms (including intersection of line and phase through line), the combined objects, construction structure drawing, architectural shadow, and perspective. The objective of this course is to enhance students' abilities in cubic thinking, structuring, and analyzing and creating drawings, the basic skills of an architect. It also lays the foundation for further study and design work.

History of Chinese and Foreign Architecture covers the development of Chinese architecture, system characteristics and structural forms. The course focuses on analysis and evaluation of the Chinese architectural heritage, creative thinking and the design method. Students will also learn the history of the development of foreign buildings and modern architectural design methods. Multimedia teaching, with interval visiting classes and classroom discussions, will deepen students’ memory of the ancient architecture images and practices, as well as strengthen their comprehension and analytical abilities.

Architectural Physics focuses on the principles of building climate, optics and architectural acoustics, and how to solve related problems. Students will learn about the indoor thermal environment, including architectural heat transfer, heat preservation, heat prevention, insulation, sunlight and sun prevention, and seasonal energy saving design. They will gain knowledge in building optics, artificial lighting and the use of moisture-proof natural light. They will learn the principles of architectural acoustics, the use of sound absorption and sound insulation materials, noise control, and indoor acoustic design. The course will improve students’ abilities to analyze and solve problems in architectural planning and design and to use their knowledge to create good living and work environments. In addition, it lays a solid foundation for future courses.

Construction Equipment familiarizes students with the various sanitary wares, pipes and accessories, and their specifications, functions and installation requirements. Students will master the types and structures of water supply and sewage engineering, the types and compositions of ventilation and air conditioning systems, and the functions, selections and installation of electrical equipment.

Engineering Mechanics covers theoretical mechanics (the statics part) and material mechanics. Based on higher mathematics, theoretical mechanics helps students master the analysis of stress, balance conditions, and the application of the balance equation. Material mechanics helps students grasp the strength, stiffness and stability of rods. This enables students to solve practical engineering problems by simplifying, analyzing and calculating, the foundation of the work they will be doing in their professional lives. Classroom learning will be supplemented with experiments.

Structural Mechanics focuses on geometric composition analysis, analysis and calculation of the static structure internal force, the drawing and application of influential lines, the static structure displacement calculation, force, displacement, torque distribution and matrix displacement. It is based on engineering mechanics. Students will grasp the principles systematically and gain the ability to analyze and calculate using engineering structural mechanics, laying the foundation for further study. Classroom learning will be supplemented with class discussions.

Building Construction introduces the knowledge and theory of construction, including walls, floors, stairs, roofs, doors, and windows, as well as basic structures. It also includes water-proof and heat perseverance design and the tendencies and expectations of architecture construction technology. Practical lessons based on the learned theory will be included. In addition, students will follow the developments in new technology and materials, stimulating their innovative spirits. This course will leave students equipped with the basic theories of building construction, the ability to solve practical problems and a professional approach to the work they will be doing.
