School of Mathematics and Physics

1.About the School

The School of Mathematics and Physics, formerly part of the Fundamental Science Department, was founded in August 2005. The Department now includes sections of Public Mathematics, Financial Mathematics, Information and Computational Science, and College Physics, overseen by the Administration Office of the Department, and supported by the Student Affairs Office, Educational Administration Office and Basic Experimental Center.

Currently, the school has 60 faculty members, including one professor, 18 associate professors (or equivalent titles) and 49 lecturers. Among them, five have doctorates and thirty-two have master’s degrees.

The School has one major, “Information and Computational Science”, the only science major at Fujian University of Technology. The major offers two areas of specialization: Software Development and Financial Mathematics. Since 2005, the first year we accepted students, the‘2+1+1’training model has been used. Presently, we have had four graduating classes.

In 2009, Information and Computational Science won the honor of “Advanced Group of Student Employment”, with an initial student employment rate of 100%.

The quality of students’ employment has only continued to improve. In 2012, graduates majoring in software development were employed by major corporations, including NetDragon Websoft Inc, New Doone Inc,and Shine Technology. Graduates in Financial Mathematics received offers from companies including ABC Fujian Branch and Industrial Securities. In addition, the department ranks highly among the majors at FJUT in student postgraduate admission.

2. Mathematical Modeling Contest

The department organizes and provides guidance for FJUT student participation in the National Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling. During the past seven years, our students have achieved four national first prizes, 14 national second prizes, and 57 provincial prizes, ranking top among universities in Fujian province. Mathematical modeling has become the highlight of the teaching and learning reform and a brand of the University.

3. Common Course Teaching

For the students of FJUT, the department provides Public Mathematics Courses and Public Physics Courses, including Advanced Mathematics, Linear Algebra, Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics, College Physics,  College Physics Experiments and Mathematical Modeling.

Advanced Algebra is a Provincial-level Excellence Course, taught by Professor TANG Xiaowen. College Mathematics, Linear Algebra, College Physics, Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics are all University-level Excellence Courses. Advanced Mathematics is set as a university-level course project, and a university-level teaching team in Public Mathematics has been formed. The department has undertaken four teaching research and reform projects, with 16 published papers, one first prize in University-level Teaching Achievement in 2008, and a third prize in University-level Teaching Achievement in 2010. The department has published a set of nine public mathematics textbooks, specially designed and edited for applied undergraduate colleges and universities, including titles Advanced Mathematics, Linear Algebra, Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics and Mathematic Experiment. Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics, edited by Professor Han Ming, won the first prize in Excellent Textbook Appraisement of FJUT.

4. Discipline Research

Due to the efforts of Professor Han Ming and all the teachers, Applied Mathematics was approved as a key course of FJUT in July, 2009. Achievements made in the discipline construction include five research directions: Matrix Theory and Its Applications, Financial Quantitative Analysis and Calculation, Probability and Statistics, Graphical Analysis and Its Applications, Scientific Computing and Its Applications.

In recent years, the department has been recognized for its scientific research, taking charge of seven natural science fund projects for Fujian Province, 13 scientific research fund projects for the Education Department of Fujian Province, and more than 20 research fund projects for FJUT. The department also participates in a national natural science fund project. As a result, more than 180 papers have been published, with 33 indexed in the three major international databases (15 in SCI, 10 in EI, 8 in ISTP), Two papers won the second prize of Natural Science Excellent Thesis of Fujian Province (one in 2008, the other in 2010). Two monographs have also been published.
