Art and Design

Specialty Introduction

The Art and Design Program developed from the Urban Planning Program (Landscape) and Architecture Program (Interior Design). In 2005, Art and Design began its own enrollment of undergraduates. This is a four year program, and graduates are awarded a bachelor's degree in Art. To date, the more than 600 graduates are working in four provinces. Urban Planning was divided into two courses of study: Interior Design and Environment Design. The students’ work has won 15 national awards and over 20 provincial awards. Of the graduates, two have been admitted to postgraduate programs.

To meet the need for talent in the developing economic zone on the west coast of the Taiwan Straits, Art and Design aims to help students gain extensive knowledge and practical skills in interior design and environment design. The program also helps them develop morally, intellectually and physically, with strong innovative spirits and urban professional skills. Graduates will be qualified for positions in interior and environment design, including design, management, education, research, consultancy, the selection of new building materials and art.

Main courses: Structural Design, Ergonomics, Design Thinking and its Expression, Introduction to Design, Architectural Design, Building Decoration Materials, Principles of Interior Design, Interior Design, Fresco Design, Sculpture Design, Chinese Folk Fine Arts, Construction Organization and Management, Plant Landscape Design, Furniture Design and Display.

Curriculum Introduction

Structural Design aims to help students master the categories, nature, change of the basic elements in visual compositions, and their types and modes in plane and space, through the study of plane and color composition. Through hand-painting practice and visual appreciation, students will grasp the basic principles and modeling concepts of composition. As a solid foundation for this profession, the course will also help to improve students’ thinking patterns and inspire their creativity.

Design Thinking and Presentation is divided into two sections: design thinking and design presentation. The thinking section supplies a foundation in methodology, and presentation offers the means of solving problems. The series of knowledge in this course helps students make transitions in their thinking and work: from basic to creative thinking, from basic skills of expression to the flexible use of many modes of expression. The course design uses the most contemporary international methods and materials, including excellent courseware, pictures, and class discussion, to help students improve their visual perception, designing thinking, and expression, while mastering design in its most contemporary form.

Building Decoration Materials exposes students to the vast variety of building decoration materials and helps them master the use of them. This supplies the framework for the whole decoration engineering field.

Principles of Interior Design focuses on the concept, work scope, objective and program of interior design. From the perspective of properties, characteristics and functions of interior design, this course analyzes the types of indoor space, indoor physical environment formation and control methods, indoor function and Ergonomics. From the angle of language, it discusses the concept of indoor design form language and the nature and features of form elements, their application form and meaning. It also focuses on the characteristics and methods of interior design thinking, indoor decoration materials, and construction management.

Interior Design focuses on the construction of the residential building, catering and the principles of interior design for other types of architectures. Design practice is used to bridge the relevant knowledge and theories.

Furniture Design and Display introduces furniture design, as well as the methods, trends and tendencies in furniture production in both China and abroad. Students will develop their ability to design furniture and solve problems within a framework of theory that meets the requirements of modern Chinese furniture enterprises and reflects contemporary design ideas.

Environmental Sculpture Design uses the modeling language (including light, lines, color, light and shade, body, space, perspective, sports, dimension and structure and texture) to present design thinking. Through the study of theory and practice, students' appreciation of models will be greatly improved. The course also aims to cultivate students' visual aesthetics and creativity, laying a solid foundation for architectural design.

Chinese Folk Arts introduces folk art works and the analysis of them. Students are expected to master the generation, development and characteristics of Chinese folk art through the acquisition of type, decorative pattern, and modeling technique, and then apply this in design practice.

Botanic Landscape Design introduces the characteristics of landscape plants, and the basic principles of a plants layout. Students are expected to master the techniques of presenting garden plants, including plane, cubic, and space presentation. In addition, students will grasp the environmental and ecological function of garden plants, their use in space construction, the economics involved, and how to apply this knowledge in practice.
